Godzilla Melee Remastered Starter Kaiju: Heisei Godzilla, Anguirus, Megalon

The three who open the game, and how to use them before you spend currency.

Starter Kaiju

Every good arena fighter hides the scary toys. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered still looks like it opens with three: Heisei Godzilla, Anguirus, and Megalon. Those were the 2002 starters (with Heisei labeled Godzilla 90’s). Until the October demo shows a different free row, train on these three. They teach the whole verb set on how to play without the energy traps of Ghidorah or Destoroyah.

If the shop later puts Godzilla 2000 on the free row, this page will change. The kits below will not. They are still the right first mains.

Heisei Godzilla

This is the box art, the roar IGN heard in the hall, and the character you should pick if you want the default campaign. IGN’s original monster guide said the 90’s suit had slightly stronger ranged tools than Godzilla 2000, who was a tad faster. That split is the reason both Godzillas exist. Heisei is the beam boxer. 2000 is the slightly twitchier boxer. Neither is a joke character.

Play him when you want:

  • Atomic breath as a real gun, not a firework.
  • Tail and punch strings that work on Tokyo walls. See maps.
  • A campaign path you can follow on the Adventure walkthrough using twenty years of FAQs.

Avoid dumping the whole energy bar at Anguirus. He will walk through the cooldown and grab you. Tap fireballs, then hold the beam when he is already standing up. Rage is a nuclear pulse style shockwave in the classic list — save it for a crowd in Melee, not for a blocked poke in Versus.

Best early victims: Gigan, if you can keep him from spinning through your fierce. Worst early nightmare: Destoroyah, who historically won this matchup. Do not buy Destoroyah just to avoid it; learn the matchup on CPU first.

Anguirus

The armadillo knight. No glamour beam that melts a skyline, lots of armor and close-range stubbornness. He is the right starter for players who hate resource bars. You still have a projectile, but your win condition is grab, fierce, and making flyers land. Four-player melee loves him because he does not accidentally kill himself with a missed Deathstorm.

Play him when you want:

  • To learn block and grab before you learn beam wars.
  • To survive online while everyone else picked a dragon.
  • To unlock Gigan later, if you still think in 2002 graphs. You do not have to. See unlocks.

Anguirus on Monster Island is a wrestling match. Anguirus on Tokyo is a demolition derby. Use buildings. The military will shoot you if you lead Destruction; that is a compliment. Let them shoot the Ghidorah who is actually ahead on score.

Megalon

The bug with drills, the starter people skip, the starter who teaches that this game is not only Godzilla versus Godzilla. Flight bursts, odd projectiles, and a kit that feels like a boss monster from a different movie because it is. If you like “wrong” fighters, start here. If you want to impress a date with the roar, start on Heisei instead.

Play him when you want:

  • To understand energy as a flight tax before you main Rodan.
  • A path that used to unlock King Ghidorah. Again, currency made that optional.
  • To be the person in a friend group who did not pick the obvious lizard.

Megalon loses to players who stay calm and anti-air. He wins against players who only practiced Godzilla on a forum. That is most of the internet in October. Being Megalon in the demo will be a research advantage.

Who to pick for the first Adventure clear

Heisei Godzilla. The stage order is the one every longplay uses, including the 2002 capture on the Adventure page. You will see Monster Island, Osaka, San Francisco, Tokyo, Seattle, Los Angeles, London, Mothership. That tour is worth more than a stylish first win as Megalon on a stage you cannot name.

Second clear: Anguirus, on Normal, hunting gallery pickups if they still spawn. Third clear: whoever you just bought with currency, probably Godzilla 2000 or Gigan. That is the unlock planner talking, not a moral law.

How starters feed the rest of the wiki

Starters exist so the tier list has a floor. If Heisei Godzilla cannot beat CPU Gigan on Easy, the problem is you, not the list. Take that information to controls and fix the beam button. Then open unlockable kaiju with a real baseline.

Do not spend day-one currency replacing your starter until you have lost a melee as that starter. You cannot shop your way into lab time. The three monsters on this page are the lab.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Are the starters still Godzilla, Anguirus, and Megalon?

That is the 2002 free row and the safe assumption until the Steam demo shows the shop. Heisei Godzilla is the renamed 90's suit.

Which starter is best for online?

Anguirus for messy melee, Heisei Godzilla for 1v1 beams. Megalon if you want surprise. See also the versus tier list.

Should I skip starters and buy Destoroyah?

Only if you already know the verbs. Most players should clear one Adventure as Heisei Godzilla first.

Where are Godzilla 2000 and Gigan?

On Unlockable kaiju. They are not expected to be free on minute one.
