How to Play Godzilla Melee Remastered

The 2002 arena rules still decide matches. Here is the kit you will actually use.

How to Play

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is easy to read from the couch and easy to play badly. The trailer looks like two rubber suits shoving skyscrapers. Under that spectacle is a small set of systems that have not changed much since 2002, which is the point of a 99 percent fidelity remaster. Learn those systems once and every kaiju on the roster becomes a skin over the same verbs.

This page is the combat primer. Button labels live on controls. Stage quirks live on maps. If you want a video that walks the announcement footage and calls out UFO stuns, missing HUD in the trailer, and why Destruction mode still matters, the embed in the middle of this article is a real 2026 breakdown, not a fake ID.

The six verbs

Every monster has the same input grammar:

  • Punch — fastest strike, lowest reach on most kits.
  • Kick — mid speed, often used as a get-up option from the floor.
  • Fierce — slow, long, or armored depending on the kaiju. Gigan’s fierce is a different threat from Anguirus’s.
  • Grab — punch plus kick (or the dedicated grab button on Xbox). Throw into a building if you can.
  • Block — stops most highs. Sweeps and throws still hurt. Do not hold it forever; chip and grabs exist.
  • Projectile tap / beam hold — tap spends a smaller energy chunk as a fireball, spike, or smog. Hold charges the signature beam. Energy is shared. Empty the bar and you are a wrestler with no gun.

Jump sits on a trigger. Some flyers (Rodan, King Ghidorah, Mecha-King Ghidorah, Megalon in bursts) can hold jump to stay airborne at extra energy cost. Crouch or run sits on the opposite trigger: hold still to duck beams, hold while moving to sprint. Right stick aims the head so a crouching Orga does not eat a beam meant for King Ghidorah’s chests.

Edged, blunt, and why the flash color matters

Original write-ups split attacks into edged and blunt. You will see a colored impact flash when a hit lands. The practical takeaway for 2026 is simpler than a frame chart: some kaiju resist one class. Mechagodzilla historically shrugs edged better. King Ghidorah historically shrugs blunt better. Gigan goes berserk on fierce swings. If a monster is not flinching the way you expect, switch the strike button instead of mashing the same one.

Destoroyah still eats Godzilla players who only know atomic breath. Rodan still annoys Ghidorah players who refuse to look up. Those matchup notes belong on the tier list and on individual starter / unlockable pages. In a melee with four players, matchup math matters less than not getting sandwiched.

Destruction is a combat resource

Buildings are not just points. A collapsing tower stuns, blocks line of sight, and can be grabbed as a thrown prop in the original ruleset. Pipeworks’ CEO called out throwing buildings as part of the fantasy they wanted to restore. Use that. If you lose a beam war, create cover. If you need a grab confirm, knock someone through a glass front.

Destruction Mode is the pure version of this idea: you are scored on property damage, not on a clean KO. The military then targets whoever is winning that contest. Tanks, choppers, and maser cannons are not flavor. They interrupt combos. If you are ahead on buildings, expect the army. If you are behind, let the leader eat the maser and steal the KO. That aggro rule is why Destruction and Melee feel different from a 1v1 Versus match.

Rage, Mothra, and other pickups

Rage is not a meter you fill by existing. A Rage pickup appears in the city. Grab it, then use the Rage input (punch plus fierce in the original) for a kaiju-specific super: nuclear pulse, Oxygen Destroyer, Deathstorm, and so on. Some characters simply double their melee while raging. Do not waste the window on a blocked poke.

Other classic pickups include health, energy, and a Mothra summon that harasses the opponent until a beam scares her off. Gallery Atari logos used to spawn on Normal and Hard Adventure; running them added stills. The remaster still advertises gallery unlocks, now also purchasable in any order through currency. See unlocks.

UFO or Vortaak gadgets can freeze a monster in place. Trailer analysis still shows that zap. If you get locked, mash your get-up plan instead of holding block — you are already a statue.

Energy discipline

New players dump the beam the moment they see a silhouette. That is how you lose to Anguirus walking through your cooldown. A better default:

  1. Poke with tap projectiles to test block.
  2. Save a full beam for a knockdown, a flyer, or a maser you need to delete.
  3. Never beam-war a character whose beam is their identity (Heisei Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, Kiryu) unless you have more energy.
  4. Flying is expensive. Rodan players who hover for style get grabbed on landing.

Adventure fights are a single round. Versus defaults to best of three and those rounds run long, which is why veterans often drop the round count in options. Melee with four players is a score attack with respawns. Your job in Melee is not a clean 100-0, it is farming knockouts and destruction without feeding the player in second place. Details sit on online multiplayer.

A practice plan for the October demo

When the Steam demo opens, ignore the urge to cycle every monster in one sitting. Pick Heisei Godzilla. Play Versus against the CPU on a city stage. Spend ten minutes only punching and grabbing. Spend ten minutes only on tap versus hold beams. Spend ten minutes trying to make the military shoot the CPU instead of you. Then read Adventure and try one campaign fight. That hour will teach more than a random 4-player slugfest.

The remaster’s UI is new, weather is new, and mode select at the character screen is new. The verbs above are not. Master the verbs and the 4K skyline is just a prettier place to get thrown into a parking garage.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is this a traditional round-based fighting game?

No. It is a 3D arena brawler with destructible cities, pickups, and military interference. Versus can be set to rounds; Melee uses score and respawns.

How do I do a Rage attack?

Collect the Rage pickup first, then use the Rage combination listed on Controls. Each kaiju's Rage animation is different.

Why do tanks keep shooting me?

The army focuses the monster with the most property damage. Stop leveling blocks if you are ahead, or use Destruction Mode on purpose and accept the heat.

Will moves change in the remaster?

Atari's line is 99 percent mechanical fidelity plus quality-of-life. Treat original move lists as the baseline until the October demo proves otherwise.
