Godzilla Melee Remastered Controls

Modern pads, the same six verbs. Train on this map until Atari publishes final glyphs.

Controls

Pipeworks has not posted a final control card for every 2026 SKU. What we do have is twenty-four years of the same input grammar, IGN’s Summer Game Fest hands-on (they put a controller in a reporter’s hands), and Steam’s store flags: full controller support, Xbox controllers called out, pad recommended. This page translates the GameCube and original Xbox layout onto PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch, and a sensible keyboard map so you can practice before getting started turns into launch night.

When official settings menus land in the October 15 Steam demo, we will replace guessed glyphs. Until then, treat the tables as a mapping of actions, not as a promise that Square will be punch on day one. Fighting games shuffle face buttons. The verbs stay: move, aim head, punch, kick, fierce, block, grab, tap projectile, hold beam, jump, crouch or run, rage, taunt.

Actions you must bind

ActionWhat it does
MoveLeft stick or WASD. D-pad also moved the monster in 2002.
Aim head / beamRight stick or mouse. Essential versus crouchers and flyers.
PunchFast strike. Part of grab on some pads.
KickMid strike and a common get-up attack.
FierceHeavy strike. Combined with punch for Rage.
BlockDedicated button. Does not beat throws or every sweep.
GrabPunch+kick or a shoulder button. Follow with a direction to throw.
ProjectileTap the beam button.
BeamHold the same button to charge the signature ray.
Jump / flyTrigger. Hold to fly on Rodan, both Ghidorahs, and similar kits.
Crouch / runOther trigger. Hold still to duck, hold while moving to sprint.
RagePunch+fierce while a Rage pickup is active.
TauntKick+fierce in the original. Cosmetic, but it is in the muscle memory.

Suggested modern layout

These suggestions mirror how the original Xbox and GameCube maps sat on a modern diamond. They are training wheels, not patch notes.

If your muscle memory is from GameCube, punch lived on A, kick on B, fierce on X, block on Y, beam on Z, jump on R, crouch/run on L, grab on A+B. The table above is the Xbox-style diamond many 2026 players will expect. Use the in-game remap screen — the remaster already advertises quality-of-life — if the defaults feel wrong.

Platform notes

PlayStation 5. Haptics are a listed remaster feature. Expect beam charge and building collapse to rumble harder than a 2002 DualShock. Adaptive trigger resistance is unconfirmed; do not buy a pad just for that rumor.

Xbox Series. The original Xbox version of DAMM already had extra content (Kiryu, extra arenas, soundtrack options). The remaster folds Kiryu into the shared 12-kaiju roster, so you are not missing a SKU-exclusive fighter this time. Any Xbox-licensed controller is the path of least resistance on PC as well.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Nintendo’s store page lists TV, tabletop, and handheld. Pro Controller is the right call for four-player melee. Joy-Con in a 4-player local match will be cramped; read online multiplayer before you promise a party.

Steam. Minimum specs assume DirectX 12. Full controller support is on the store page. Keyboard is listed here because some people will try it. Arena brawlers with analog head-aim are miserable on keys. Bind a pad.

Training habits that actually transfer

  1. Spend five minutes only aiming the right stick without attacking. Beam tracking is the skill that separates veterans from trailer tourists.
  2. Practice tap versus hold on the beam button until you can fire a fireball without accidentally charging.
  3. From knockdown, try kick get-up, fierce get-up, and block. The original used get-up attacks on kick and fierce.
  4. Walk into a building, grab debris if the remaster still allows throws, and aim the toss. Destruction is a combo tool, not a cutscene. See how to play.
  5. Map Rage to something you will not hit while mashing. Accidental supers waste the pickup.

Accessibility and options you should look for

The 2002 pause menu let you change round count, because Versus rounds ran long. Look for that again. Look for invert-Y on the head stick, vibration off, and a way to skip attract movies. The remaster UI is overhauled and mode select now happens at character select, so the first pause screen may look nothing like the GameCube one. That is fine. Bind the six verbs, then go play Adventure or a CPU Versus on Tokyo.

If a friend hands you a pad on launch night and you freeze, remember this sentence: left stick walk, right stick look, three strikes, one block, one trigger jump, one trigger duck, bumper beam. Everything else is a combo of those. The kaiju change the animations, not the grammar.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Are these the final official bindings?

Not yet. They are a faithful map of 2002 actions onto modern pads. Update after the October 15 Steam demo if Atari ships a different default.

Can I play well on keyboard?

You can move and punch. You will struggle to aim beams. Steam recommends a controller.

How do I grab?

Punch plus kick on the original GameCube layout, or a dedicated shoulder on Xbox. Throw immediately after the grab connects.

Which page should I read after this?

Return to How to play for system explanations, or Getting started if you still need a launch plan.
