Godzilla Melee Remastered How to Play Destruction Mode

Score the city, not the knockout. Military heat is the tax.

Destruction Mode

Destruction Mode is the score attack hiding inside Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered. The IGN Live and GameSpot announcement trailers name it on the feature list next to online play. You are not trying to drain a health bar. You are trying to flatten Tokyo, San Francisco, or Osaka faster than the clock and the other monsters. The how to play verbs still apply. The win condition does not.

The video in the middle of this page is GameSpot’s announcement cut, a real 2026 upload. It is here because that trailer is one of the places Destruction is called out on screen. Until the October 15 Steam demo, treat the rules below as the 2002 system plus remaster visuals — Pipeworks promised about 99 percent mechanical fidelity.

What you are scored on

Property damage. Buildings, bridges, landmarks, and props. A beam through a skyscraper is a combo extender and a point fountain. A clean punch on another kaiju is optional. If you play Destruction like Versus, you will lose to a Megalon who only looks at glass.

Practical scoring loop:

  1. Open with a held beam on the densest block of towers.
  2. Grab debris or a stunned rival and throw them through the next row.
  3. Sprint (crouch-trigger plus stick) to a fresh district before the military arrives.
  4. Tap projectiles only to finish a cracked building. Save the full beam for a new skyline.

Maps matter more here than in Adventure. Monster Island is a terrible Destruction stage because there is almost nothing to break. Tokyo and Los Angeles are the farms. London is a close third. The Mothership is a joke pick unless you like alien panels.

Military aggro is the real boss

Tanks, choppers, and maser cannons target the monster with the most property damage. If you are winning, you are also the army’s favorite. That is not flavor. A maser interrupt during a beam charge is a lost thousand points.

How to live with it:

  • Dump a small lead on purpose if four-player Destruction is on. Let second place eat a volley, then steal the next block.
  • Use buildings as cover from choppers. Right-stick aim still matters; see controls.
  • Rage pickups in Destruction are for melting a whole city block, not for a vanity super on a 20 percent building.
  • If the remaster still lets Hedorah or other field pests spawn, they are obstacles, not score. Do not chase them off-camera.

Best kaiju for Destruction

This is not the versus tier list. Beams and wide fierce attacks print points. Grab specialists print points if the stage is dense.

  • Heisei Godzilla — default farm. Breath plus tail. Start here on starter kaiju.
  • Mechagodzilla / Kiryu — walking turrets. Read mecha kaiju.
  • King Ghidorah — three mouths, terrible if you empty the bar hovering.
  • Anguirus — worse beam, better at throwing wreckage in Tokyo alleys.
  • Rodan — only if you can dive a row of towers without burning the energy tax.

Buy a flyer after you can already farm as Godzilla. The unlock planner still wants a second identity before a trophy dragon.

Party and online notes

Local Destruction is a yelling contest. House-rule Tokyo night and a shared timer. Online multiplayer has not confirmed a Destruction queue. If matchmaking only offers Versus and Melee at launch, run Destruction locally and keep online for melee.

Day versus night: day is readable, night is the trailer. Weather (rain, called out in late-August UI coverage) will hide cracked buildings. Play day until you know the collision. Details on the UI and weather update.

A ten-minute drill for the Steam demo

  1. Load Destruction on Tokyo day as Heisei Godzilla.
  2. Ignore the CPU for sixty seconds. Only buildings.
  3. Watch when the army spawns. Note the lead you had.
  4. Repeat and try to delay the maser by thirty seconds.
  5. Then play one round where you also KO the CPU, and compare scores.

If your KO round scores lower, you now understand the mode. If it scores higher, the remaster changed the mix and this page will move after October 15. Until then, Destruction is how you learn that cities are weapons — the same lesson Adventure teaches with a plot. Bookmark the Guides hub so the sibling pages stay one click away.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Destruction Mode in the remaster?

Yes. Announcement trailers list it with local and online play. Exact scoring numbers wait for the October 15 demo.

Do knockouts count?

KOs are not the primary win condition. Property damage is. Use KOs only when they also collapse a block.

Which stage should I pick?

Tokyo or Los Angeles. Skip Monster Island. See Maps.

Why do tanks keep shooting me?

You are winning. The army focuses the destruction leader. Share the lead or use cover.
